The Mitchells Plain Cubs Festival is set to return this weekend, offering a platform for young footballers to showcase their talent while bringing together families and communities in a celebration of grassroots sport.

Now in its twelfth year, the LFA Mitchells Plain Cubs Festival has become a well-established fixture on the local sporting calendar, drawing participation from teams across Cape Town and surrounding areas. The event is designed to provide young players with structured match experience while promoting participation and development at an early age.

The festival will feature a range of age categories, including under-six, under-eight and under-ten divisions for boys, as well as an under-thirteen division for girls. Organisers say the focus remains firmly on development, with an emphasis on teamwork, discipline and building confidence through competitive play.

Taking place at the Strandfontein Sports Facility, the event will run over three days, with matches scheduled from nine in the morning until five in the afternoon. The format allows teams to compete in multiple fixtures, giving players extended time on the field and valuable exposure to match conditions.

Beyond the competition itself, the festival also serves as an important community gathering. Families, coaches and supporters are expected to attend in large numbers, creating an environment that celebrates local talent and encourages wider participation in sport.

The event has also become a space for talent identification, with local coaches and scouts using the opportunity to observe emerging players. This adds another layer of importance for participants, many of whom are taking part in organised competition for the first time.

With affordable entry fees set at ten rand for adults and five rand for children, the festival remains accessible to the broader community, reinforcing its role as both a sporting and social event.

As grassroots football continues to grow, events like the Mitchells Plain Cubs Festival play a key role in developing the next generation of South African talent while strengthening community ties through sport.
