Cape Town skateboarder Jean-Marc Johannes has made a breakthrough on the international stage, delivering a standout performance in his debut at the Urban World Series and placing South African skateboarding firmly in the global spotlight.
Johannes secured a fourth-place finish at a major Urban World Series event in Malaysia, marking a significant milestone in his career and making him the first South African to compete in the global competition. The event, which forms part of a prestigious international circuit, brought together some of the world’s top skateboarders, placing Johannes among elite company.
Reflecting on the experience, Johannes described the moment as a long-awaited achievement. “It was my first time in the Urban World Series, and I’ve followed it for a long time. Being part of it felt like living one of my dreams,” he said.
Despite narrowly missing out on a podium position, his performance has positioned him as one of the sport’s emerging contenders, demonstrating both technical skill and composure under pressure. Competing against experienced international athletes also provided valuable insight into the level required to succeed at the highest tier of the sport.
Johannes indicated that the competition has already influenced his preparation going forward, particularly in terms of strategy and consistency. “I reflected on how I performed throughout the event, what I did right and what I can improve,” he said, highlighting the importance of learning from each stage of the competition.
The significance of his participation extends beyond personal achievement. As the first South African to compete in the Urban World Series, Johannes’ presence on the international stage signals growing recognition for the sport locally and provides inspiration for younger athletes looking to follow a similar path.
His focus now turns to the next major event in Barcelona later this year, where he will aim to build on his debut performance and challenge for a podium finish.
As skateboarding continues to grow in popularity, Johannes’ progress represents an important step in expanding South Africa’s footprint in global competitive sport.
