A violent weekend across the Western Cape has left six people dead and several others injured, underscoring the ongoing challenge of crime in parts of the province despite intensified law enforcement operations.
Police are investigating a series of shootings reported across Mitchells Plain, Franschhoek, and Harare, where separate incidents unfolded within a short period, highlighting the spread of violence across multiple communities.
The weekend’s incidents began in Lentegeur, Mitchells Plain, where a 17-year-old boy was shot and killed in Morgan Village on Friday night. In a separate incident later that evening, an unidentified man was killed during a shooting at a taxi rank in Portlands.
In Franschhoek, authorities responded to shootings at three spaza shops in the Langrug informal settlement. Two Ethiopian nationals were killed and another person was injured when gunmen opened fire. The motive behind the attack remains under investigation.
Meanwhile, in Harare, two foreign nationals, a Malawian and a Somali citizen, were shot and killed while delivering goods. Police have confirmed that no arrests have yet been made in connection with these incidents, with investigations continuing across multiple policing precincts.
The latest wave of violence comes despite the deployment of the South African National Defence Force to assist police in gang-affected areas earlier this month. More than 50 murders have been reported since the intervention began, raising concerns about the effectiveness of current measures.
In a separate development, police confirmed a breakthrough in Gugulethu, where four suspects aged between 24 and 30 have been arrested in connection with two separate murder cases.
The arrests relate to incidents that took place on March 23 and April 13, where five people were killed across two separate crime scenes in the same area. Detectives linked the suspects to both incidents following an intelligence-led operation spanning the Nyanga and Khayelitsha policing precincts.
Police say the suspects are expected to appear in court as investigations continue, with further arrests not ruled out.
The combination of ongoing violence and targeted arrests highlights both the scale of the challenge facing law enforcement and the continued focus on dismantling criminal networks across the Western Cape. While breakthroughs offer some progress, the frequency of incidents underscores the urgency of sustained intervention as authorities work to stabilise affected communities.
