Western Cape: Parents and guardians must confirm Grade R, Grade 1 and Grade 8 school placements today as the Western Cape Education Department prepares to release more than 64,000 places currently held by learners who received offers from multiple schools.
Today marks the final date for Western Cape families to accept and confirm successful school placement offers for the 2027 academic year. The deadline applies to Grade R, Grade 1 and Grade 8 applications submitted through the Western Cape Education Department’s online admissions system.
More than 46,000 learners received successful offers from more than one school during the first admissions round. Those learners are collectively holding over 64,000 additional school places that cannot yet be offered to other applicants. Once parents select and confirm one preferred school, the remaining successful offers attached to the learner will be removed. Those places can then be offered to children who have not yet secured admission.
The WCED has stressed that the first release of admission outcomes did not complete the placement process. Western Cape Education Minister David Maynier said parents had until the 15th of June to confirm their choices, but appealed to families to act sooner rather than later. Schools May Contact Parents As From Today
Schools may begin contacting parents as from today, 15th of June, until 27th of June, as places become available. This means families whose children did not receive an offer during the initial admissions round could still be contacted during the coming days.
Parents should regularly check the WCED admissions system and monitor their email, SMS and telephone messages. They should also make certain that the contact information recorded on the admissions system remains correct. A school may be unable to reach a family when a place becomes available if telephone numbers or email addresses have changed since the original application was submitted.
After today, parents who receive a new placement offer will generally have three days to accept it. Families should therefore respond promptly when contacted by a school or the WCED.
What Parents With Successful Offers Must Do
Parents who received one or more successful offers must log into the official WCED admissions portal and confirm the school they want their child to attend. Where a learner has received several offers, only one school can be selected. Confirming the preferred school will release the learner’s remaining offers so that those places can be allocated to other applicants.
Parents whose children received only one successful offer should also make sure that the placement has been formally accepted. The confirmation recorded through the admissions system provides the official record that the learner intends to take up the place.
Families should not assume that a verbal discussion with the school is sufficient. They must ensure that their acceptance has been properly captured.
What Happens If No Choice Is Confirmed?
Parents who received several successful offers will not lose every placement if they fail to make a final selection. The WCED’s admissions rules state that the first successful school, based on the order in which the parent originally ranked the applications, will be activated automatically. All other successful applications will then be removed.
This prevents individual learners from continuing to hold places at several schools. However, it also means that families who fail to confirm their preferred school could lose the opportunity to choose between the offers they received. The ranking selected when the original application was submitted will determine which successful placement remains active.
Why 64,000 Places Are Still Unavailable
The current pressure does not mean that every Western Cape school is completely full. A significant number of places remain temporarily occupied by learners who received more than one successful application result.
For example, a learner who received offers from three schools can attend only one. Until the parent confirms a final choice, the other two places remain unavailable to families on the waiting list.
The WCED says more than 46,000 learners are in this position. Their additional successful offers account for more than 64,000 places that are expected to reopen as choices are confirmed.
This is why the department has asked parents whose children remain without an offer not to regard the initial results as the end of the process. Waiting lists can move quickly once multiple offers are removed from the system.
What Parents Without An Offer Should Do
Parents whose children have not yet secured a placement should continue checking the online admissions system. They should remain available by telephone and email and respond quickly when a school makes contact.
The department has advised families to remain patient while schools work through the newly released places. Schools will contact parents as spaces become available between today and the 27th of June.
The winter school holiday begins on the 27th of June and continues until the 20th of July. Placement activity may slow while schools are closed. Schools will resume finalising their 2027 enrolment lists from the 20th of July until the middle of August.
From the middle of August, the WCED will assist parents whose children still have outstanding placements. The department cannot guarantee admission to a family’s preferred school. Placement depends on available capacity and the admission policy applied by each public school.
Families Who Missed The Application Period
The late online application window has closed. Parents and guardians who have not submitted an application must now approach their nearest WCED education district office.
District officials will assist families with the application process and identify schools where places may remain available. Late applicants are considered after schools have processed applications received during the official on-time and late online periods.
Parents should take the learner’s identification documents and any supporting records requested by district officials.
Appeals Open In August
Parents who believe an on-time Grade R, Grade 1 or Grade 8 application was handled unfairly may submit an appeal to the Western Cape Education Minister. The online appeal period will run from the 1st to the 14th of August.
An appeal does not guarantee placement at the school concerned. It considers whether the admission process and the school’s policy were applied lawfully and fairly.
Parents should keep copies of their original applications, school correspondence, admission outcomes and supporting documents.
