Bellville: Barnyard Tyger Valley will open its new live tribute production, Simply the Best, this weekend, bringing the music of Michael Jackson, Tina Turner, Stevie Wonder, Cher and Queen to its Cape Town stage.

Barnyard Tyger Valley will begin a new theatre season this weekend with the opening of Simply the Best, a live tribute production built around the music, performances and stage identities of five globally recognised artists.

The production opens on Saturday at 19:30, followed by a Sunday matinee at 14:00. Both opening-weekend performances are listed at R200, with the show scheduled to continue at the Bellville venue until the 13th of September.

Simply the Best follows the venue’s Absolute 80s production, which completed its run on Sunday. The new programme shifts the focus from one musical decade to five individual acts whose songs have remained part of popular culture across several generations.

Five Music Legacies in One Production

The production pays tribute to Michael Jackson, Tina Turner, Stevie Wonder, Cher and Queen. Each section of the show draws on the music, performance style and visual identity associated with the artist being represented.

The Michael Jackson segment includes songs such as Billie Jean, Beat It, Black or White and Smooth Criminal, supported by choreography intended to recall the movement and stage presence that became central to his live performances.

Tina Turner’s section includes Nutbush City Limits, Proud Mary, What’s Love Got to Do with It and Simply the Best. These songs give the production its title and place her powerful rock and soul catalogue at the centre of the programme.

The Queen tribute features music associated with Freddie Mercury, including A Kind of Magic, Somebody to Love and Crazy Little Thing Called Love. Cher is represented through songs such as Believe, Strong Enough and I Found Someone, while the Stevie Wonder selection includes Superstition, Part-Time Lover, Lately, Happy Birthday and You Are the Sunshine of My Life.

By bringing the five catalogues together, the production moves between pop, soul, rock, funk and dance music rather than remaining within one style or period.

Live Ensemble Carries the Production

The Barnyard describes Simply the Best as a full live production performed by a multi-member cast of singers and musicians.

The performers are expected to recreate the vocal character, choreography and stage energy associated with each artist without presenting the show as a direct impersonation concert. Costumes, lighting and movement are used to help distinguish the different sections of the programme.

The production format allows the musicians to move between demanding vocal performances, layered Queen arrangements, Stevie Wonder’s soul catalogue, Michael Jackson’s dance-driven songs and Tina Turner’s rock performances.

This variety places considerable pressure on the cast, because the five artists being celebrated have sharply different musical identities and performance styles.

The show therefore depends on more than a familiar playlist. It requires the ensemble to create clear transitions between each tribute while maintaining the pace of a single live production.

Opening Weekend Programme

The opening performance takes place on Saturday at 19:30. The first Sunday matinee follows at 14:00.

Barnyard Tyger Valley lists both opening-weekend tickets at R200. The venue also offers selected specials during the wider run, including a buy-one-get-one-free promotion for Thursday evening Barnyard productions.

Sunday matinee discounts are available for children under 12 and pensioners, subject to the theatre’s terms and the specific performance selected.

The venue advises patrons to confirm ticket prices and promotional conditions when booking, because specials cannot always be combined and prices may change.

The production continues through June, July, August and into September, giving Capetonians several opportunities to attend beyond the opening weekend.

Barnyard’s Informal Theatre Format

Barnyard Tyger Valley operates from Tyger Valley Shopping Centre in Bellville and uses an informal, table-based theatre layout rather than conventional rows of auditorium seating.

The venue combines live entertainment with food and beverages, allowing groups to attend for birthdays, social gatherings, company events and fundraising evenings.

Food can be ordered at the theatre, while selected platters may be pre-ordered in advance. The venue is cashless, and outside food and beverages are not permitted.

This format has become part of the Barnyard identity. Audiences are encouraged to sing along and respond to the performances, creating a different atmosphere from a formal concert hall or traditional theatre production.

The venue seats more than 300 people, making it large enough to accommodate group bookings while retaining a relatively close connection between the performers and audience.

A New Venue for CTNews Event Coverage

Cape Town News has not previously reported on the Barnyard Tyger Valley programme, despite the venue’s regular schedule of tribute shows, local performers, comedians and touring South African musicians.

Simply the Best provides an opportunity to begin covering the Bellville theatre as part of a broader events and lifestyle calendar extending beyond the Cape Town city centre.

Northern suburbs venues play an important role in Cape Town’s entertainment economy. They provide local access to live performances for Capetonians who may not regularly travel to the city centre, Waterfront or southern suburbs for evening events.

Tyger Valley Shopping Centre is surrounded by established residential and commercial areas, including Bellville, Durbanville, Kenridge, Welgemoed and the wider northern suburbs. A venue based in this area can therefore serve audiences who want live entertainment closer to home.

Regular coverage of the Barnyard programme can also introduce readers to one-night concerts, tribute productions, comedy performances and fundraising events that may otherwise receive limited local news attention.

Tribute Productions and Musical Memory

Tribute productions remain popular because they allow audiences to hear familiar songs performed live without requiring the original artists to tour.

In the case of Simply the Best, the programme combines performers from different generations. Stevie Wonder, Cher and Queen established major international careers decades before Michael Jackson and Tina Turner reached some of their biggest commercial peaks, yet their music continues to overlap in modern playlists and radio programming.

The show also gives younger audiences an introduction to songs they may know through films, television, streaming platforms, sporting events and social media rather than through the original album releases.

For older audience members, the production offers a more direct connection to the period when the songs first became popular.

That combination of recognition and discovery helps explain why tribute productions can attract families, couples and groups with different musical preferences.

Not a Biography of the Artists

Simply the Best is presented as a music-driven tribute rather than a full biographical stage production.

The show is not intended to provide a complete account of the personal histories, controversies or careers of Michael Jackson, Tina Turner, Stevie Wonder, Cher or the members of Queen. Its focus is the performance of well-known songs and the recreation of selected visual and musical elements associated with the artists.

Audiences should therefore expect a concert-style experience rather than a documentary or dramatic retelling of the performers’ lives.

This distinction is important because the production celebrates the public music catalogues and stage identities of the artists without claiming to replace the original performers or provide a complete historical interpretation.

Additional Tyger Valley Performances

Simply the Best is not the only production scheduled at Barnyard Tyger Valley during the coming weeks.

South African singer Elandré is due to appear at the venue on the 24th of June, while rock band Prime Circle is scheduled for the 1st of July.

These one-night performances sit alongside the longer-running Barnyard production and give the venue a mixed programme of in-house tribute entertainment and visiting South African acts.

For Capetonians planning a night out, the schedule therefore offers both a continuing show that can be booked across several months and limited performances available on specific dates.

The full programme and individual booking pages should be checked before travelling, because performance schedules and ticket availability may change.

Booking and Venue Information

Barnyard Tyger Valley is situated at Tyger Valley Shopping Centre, near the food court.

The theatre’s booking line operates from 10:00 until 17:00. Patrons can book through the official Barnyard Theatre website or contact the venue directly.

The theatre can be reached on 087 094 6124, while WhatsApp enquiries can be sent to 068 743 4563.

Email enquiries can be directed to tygervalley@barnyardtheatre.co.za.

Patrons should confirm arrival times, seating arrangements, food orders and any promotional discounts before attending.

Why the Opening Matters

The opening of Simply the Best gives Cape Town audiences a new live production during the middle of winter, when indoor entertainment becomes an important part of the city’s event calendar.

It also provides work for local singers, musicians, technicians, hospitality staff and venue employees involved in the production and its extended run.

Live theatre venues contribute to the local creative economy by supporting performers and maintaining regular opportunities for audiences to experience music outside stadiums, festivals and large touring concerts.

For Barnyard Tyger Valley, the weekend marks the transition from its Absolute 80s season into a new programme that will continue for almost three months.

For Capetonians, it offers a familiar collection of songs delivered through a live ensemble in an informal northern suburbs setting.
