For the families of multiple victims, and for investigators who spent years building one of Delft’s most disturbing murder cases, justice has finally arrived. More than six years after a brutal crime spree left several lives shattered, the Western Cape High Court has handed down some of the toughest sentences seen in the province this year, sending two convicted killers away for life.
The Western Cape High Court has handed down multiple life sentences to two convicted killers in a case that shocked communities across Delft and claimed the life of a police officer.
Following a lengthy investigation and prosecution process, Cebo Soboyise, twenty-nine, and Zola Golela, thirty-eight, have each been sentenced to three life terms plus seventy-five years of direct imprisonment after being convicted on multiple charges including murder, armed robbery, and the illegal possession of prohibited firearms and ammunition.
The convictions were secured earlier this year, with sentencing now bringing finality to a case that began on the night of November twenty-seventh, twenty nineteen.
According to the Hawks, officers responding to reports of gunfire in Thubelitsha discovered a man lying in the street with a fatal gunshot wound to the head.
Investigators later established that three suspects had allegedly targeted the victim during a robbery, stealing his cellphone before opening fire when he resisted.
What followed would become a major breakthrough in the case.
A vehicle matching witness descriptions was later spotted in Mfuleni after reportedly running out of fuel and becoming stranded.
Police approached the vehicle and found two occupants still inside while a third suspect had reportedly gone to fetch petrol.
When the third suspect allegedly noticed police activity, he fled the scene.
Officers immediately searched the vehicle and made a discovery that would prove crucial to the prosecution.
Inside the vehicle, police recovered two firearms, one of them a prohibited weapon, together with seventeen suspected stolen cellphones.
One of those phones was positively identified as belonging to the murdered police officer.
That forensic and evidentiary link ultimately tied the accused directly to one of the province’s most serious murder investigations.
The court sentenced both men as follows: multiple fifteen-year sentences for robbery with aggravating circumstances, three life sentences for murder, and additional prison terms relating to firearm offences.
Although several charges resulted in not-guilty verdicts, the court ordered that the sentences run concurrently, meaning each accused will effectively serve one life sentence plus seventy-five years imprisonment.
Both men were also declared permanently unfit to possess a firearm.
Western Cape Hawks head Major General Mathipa Makgato welcomed the outcome, praising both investigators and prosecutors for their persistence in securing justice.
For the families of the victims, and for officers who worked the case over several years, the ruling marks the closing of a painful chapter, while sending a clear message that violent attacks on police officers and innocent civilians will continue to face the full force of the law.
