Highlights
  • Police seized mandrax tablets worth over R2.7 million in Delft and Stikland
  • A 45-year-old suspect is expected to appear in the Bellville Magistrates’ Court
  • The operation expanded from a roadside search to a storage facility
  • Authorities believe the drugs were intended for wider distribution

What began as a routine stop-and-search operation in Delft has developed into a significant drug seizure, highlighting the scale and persistence of narcotics distribution networks operating within Cape Town. Police uncovered a large quantity of mandrax tablets during the operation, with the investigation quickly expanding beyond the initial roadside search.

Officers were conducting stop-and-search operations in the N2 Gateway area when they pulled over a vehicle and searched both the driver and the car. During the search, police discovered drugs and cash believed to be linked to criminal activity.

The discovery prompted further investigation, leading officers to a storage facility in Stikland. It was there that the operation escalated, with police uncovering a far larger quantity of mandrax tablets stored on the premises.

In total, authorities seized tens of thousands of tablets, with the consignment estimated to carry a street value of more than R2.7 million. The scale of the seizure suggests that the drugs were not intended for isolated use, but rather formed part of a broader distribution network.

Police believe the drugs were destined for circulation within local communities, where substances such as mandrax continue to fuel addiction, gang activity and associated crime.

The suspect, a 45-year-old man, was arrested at the scene and is expected to appear in the Bellville Magistrates’ Court once processing has been completed. Authorities have indicated that additional charges could follow as investigations continue into possible links with other individuals or networks.

Law enforcement officials say operations like these are a key part of ongoing efforts to disrupt the supply of drugs at both street and distribution levels. By targeting storage points as well as transport routes, police aim to limit the availability of narcotics and reduce their impact on communities.

The case underscores the ongoing challenge faced by authorities in tackling organised crime, particularly in areas where drug activity remains deeply entrenched.

As the investigation continues, further developments are expected as police work to trace the origins and intended distribution channels of the seized drugs.
