  • Commuters boarded buses without being charged
  • Nyanga and surrounding routes among the affected areas
  • System restored later in the morning after emergency intervention

As Friday morning’s rush hour got underway across Cape Town, hundreds of commuters received an unexpected start to their day after a technical glitch at Golden Arrow Bus Services temporarily disabled onboard fare systems, allowing passengers to travel for free as buses continued rolling through some of the city’s busiest transport corridors.

As thousands of Capetonians made their way to work on Friday morning, many were met with an unexpected surprise after a technical failure at Golden Arrow Bus Services temporarily disabled electronic fare collection systems, allowing passengers to board buses without paying during one of the city’s busiest commuting periods.

The incident unfolded during the early morning rush on Friday, 8th of May 2026, as commuters across several major routes attempted to tap their travel cards only to find that onboard fare systems were not responding.

Among the affected areas was Nyanga, where passengers reportedly boarded buses free of charge as drivers and staff worked to keep services moving while technicians investigated the fault.

Golden Arrow spokesperson Bronwen Dyke-Beyer later confirmed that the company had experienced a systems error during the morning commute, affecting tap-in card readers across parts of the network.

Despite the disruption, bus services continued operating, with passengers still being transported to work, school, and key transport hubs across Cape Town.

Social media quickly lit up as commuters shared images and reports of buses continuing their routes while fare systems remained offline, with some joking that it was the best start to a Friday they had experienced in months.

Golden Arrow technicians worked through the morning to restore normal operations, with the company later confirming that services and fare collection systems had been fully restored by approximately half past eight.

While the glitch created an unusual moment of goodwill for commuters, the incident also highlighted the increasing reliance on electronic payment infrastructure across Cape Town’s public transport system.

For thousands of daily passengers who depend on Golden Arrow to get to work on time, the company’s decision to keep buses moving despite the technical setback ensured that the morning disruption remained an inconvenience rather than a commuter crisis.
