  • Police link incidents to retaliation following earlier killing
  • Anti-Gang Unit deployed as suspects remain at large

A quiet evening in Bonteheuwel turned into chaos as gunfire erupted in two separate locations, leaving five people wounded, including four children, and once again exposing the human cost of retaliation violence on Cape Town’s communities.

The latest wave of violence in Bonteheuwel unfolded on Tuesday evening, when two separate shooting incidents left multiple victims injured within a short span of time, intensifying concerns about ongoing instability in the area.

According to the South African Police Service, the first incident occurred in Amandel Street, where a group of residents had gathered outside a local shop. Witnesses reported that a vehicle approached the area before two suspects exited and began firing towards the group.

Among those injured were four children, aged 10, 11, 12 and 16, all of whom were caught in the line of fire. Emergency services responded to the scene and transported the victims to nearby medical facilities. Authorities have confirmed that the children are in stable condition.

Less than an hour later, a second shooting was reported in Citrus Street, a short distance away. In this incident, a 30-year-old man was shot in the back by a gunman believed to have fired from a moving vehicle. He was also taken to hospital for treatment.

Provincial police spokesperson Brigadier Novela Potelwa confirmed that both incidents are being investigated by the Anti-Gang Unit, which has been tasked with tracking down those responsible. No arrests have been made at this stage.

Police believe the shootings are linked to retaliation following the killing of a known gang figure earlier in the week, a pattern that has repeatedly driven cycles of violence in parts of the Cape Flats.

Ward councillor Angus McKenzie described the incidents as a stark reminder of how quickly violence can escalate and impact innocent lives. He strongly condemned the targeting of public spaces and the exposure of children to such incidents.

Community members have been urged to come forward with information that could assist police in identifying the suspects. Authorities have reiterated that even small pieces of information could prove critical in progressing the investigation.

The incidents highlight a broader challenge facing law enforcement and local communities, where retaliation-driven violence continues to disrupt daily life and place vulnerable residents at risk.

As investigations continue, the focus remains on stabilising the area and preventing further escalation in the days ahead.
