A drive-by shooting in Kalksteenfontein has heightened concerns over gang-related violence in Cape Town, after a man believed to be linked to the Fancy Boys gang was killed and another injured, prompting authorities to increase security presence amid fears of retaliation.

The shooting took place on Thursday afternoon on a bridge near the corner of Jakkalsvlei Avenue and Valhalla Drive, an area that has seen ongoing tensions linked to gang activity.

According to the South African Police Service, the victims were travelling from Bonteheuwel towards Kalksteenfontein when a vehicle approached and opened fire. Police said the attack occurred in broad daylight, highlighting the continued risk of violence in public spaces.

A thirty-six-year-old man died at the scene after sustaining gunshot injuries. A second man, aged thirty, was wounded and transported to a nearby hospital for medical treatment.

Police spokesperson Captain Frederick Van Wyk confirmed that cases of murder and attempted murder have been opened, with the motive forming part of an active investigation.

“As they were driving, a blue Audi vehicle passed, and the occupants randomly started shooting at them,” Van Wyk said, adding that the vehicle’s registration number remains unknown.

While police have not officially confirmed the identity of the deceased, the incident is understood to be linked to gang dynamics in the area. The Fancy Boys gang has been associated with activity in parts of the Cape Flats, alongside other groups that operate in overlapping territories.

Subcouncil chairperson Angus McKenzie warned that the situation could lead to further instability if not contained quickly.

“This development raises serious concern about the potential for retaliatory violence. In response, we have already engaged and briefed the relevant safety and security agencies operating in the area, including the SANDF, to ensure heightened vigilance and visible presence where necessary,” McKenzie said.

Residents in nearby communities have also raised concerns about the potential for escalation, noting that gang-related incidents often trigger cycles of retaliation. Law enforcement officials have indicated that increased visibility and coordinated response measures are being implemented to stabilise the area.

Police have urged anyone with information related to the shooting to come forward and assist with the investigation, with all information treated confidentially.

Gang violence remains a persistent challenge in parts of the Cape Flats, where socio-economic conditions and entrenched criminal networks continue to contribute to instability. Authorities say preventing escalation in the coming days will be critical as investigations continue.
