  • Focus shifts to crucial overseas fixtures

A dominant victory on home soil has not only lifted the Stormers back to the top of the URC standings, it has also reignited a heated response from head coach John Dobson, who has pushed back against recent criticism of his team.

Stormers head coach John Dobson has responded firmly to critics following his side’s emphatic 48–12 victory over the Glasgow Warriors in Cape Town, a result that re-establishes the team at the top of the United Rugby Championship standings.

The win comes at a crucial stage of the competition, as teams battle for position ahead of the playoffs. For the Stormers, the result represents both a return to form and a statement performance after a recent defeat that drew sharp criticism.

Dobson acknowledged that the previous loss was costly, particularly in terms of dropped points, but questioned the intensity of the reaction directed at his players. He pointed to the circumstances surrounding the team during that period, including internal challenges that affected preparation and performance.

“We got a lot of criticism for the Connacht performance,” Dobson said, adding that the context in which the team played had not been fully considered.

The coach also defended his squad against personal attacks, suggesting that the response from some quarters lacked understanding of the pressures faced by the players. “I don’t mind when it happens to me, but what I don’t understand is the players getting hammered like that. It is not humane,” he said.

On the field, however, the Stormers delivered a decisive response. Their performance against Glasgow highlighted a shift in mindset, with the team focusing on attacking play and maximising points opportunities.

With the URC entering its final stages, attention now turns to a demanding overseas schedule. The Stormers will face Ulster in their next fixture, a key match that could determine whether they maintain control at the top of the standings.

Dobson has made it clear that the objective is to secure maximum points from the remaining fixtures to guarantee a home quarter-final, a significant advantage heading into the knockout rounds.

Captain Ruhan Nel has also emphasised the importance of maintaining momentum, noting that the team remains highly motivated as the competition reaches its decisive phase.

With confidence restored and pressure building, the Stormers now face the challenge of turning this resurgence into a strong finish at the top of the table.
