Lotus River: Western Cape Anti-Gang Unit detectives are investigating the killing of four men and the serious wounding of a fifth after gunmen allegedly arrived in a vehicle and opened fire outside a residential block of flats on Thursday night.
The shooting happened at approximately 22:30 near the corner of Nita Street and Olga Road, where police said five men had been sitting outside the block of flats. Several people travelling in a vehicle allegedly stopped near the group, climbed out and fired multiple shots in their direction before escaping.
Western Cape police spokesperson Novela Potelwa said four of the victims, aged between 32 and 44, died at the scene. A fifth man survived the attack but suffered serious injuries and was taken to a medical facility for treatment.
“The occupants alighted from the vehicle and fired shots in the direction of the victims. Four men between the ages of 32 and 44 died on the scene, and another was taken to a medical facility with serious injuries,” Potelwa said.
The names of the deceased had not been released by Saturday morning. Police have also not provided an update on the surviving victim’s condition or disclosed whether investigators have identified the vehicle allegedly used by the attackers.
Anti-Gang Unit Takes Over Investigation
Detectives from the Western Cape Anti-Gang Unit are investigating the circumstances surrounding the shooting, which police believe may have been connected to gang conflict.
Grassy Park police have opened four murder cases and one attempted murder case. No arrests had been made by the time of publication, and police had not announced the identities of any suspects.
Potelwa said police resources in Lotus River had been strengthened after the attack to prevent further violence and protect the surrounding community.
“Police deployments in the area have since been reinforced in an effort to ensure no further shooting incidents occur. Grassy Park police have opened murder and attempted murder dockets for investigation,” she said.
Potelwa added that the attack appeared to be gang-related. However, police have not identified which gangs may have been involved, and the suspected motive remains part of the investigation.
The circumstances described by police indicate that the victims were deliberately targeted, with the alleged attackers arriving together, leaving the vehicle and firing directly at the group. Investigators will now need to establish who planned the attack, how the gunmen escaped and whether the victims had any connection to the suspected gang dispute.
Cape Town Faces Another Deadly Week Of Gun Violence
The Lotus River killings followed another suspected gang-related shooting in Manenberg on Wednesday, where one man was killed and six people were wounded, including a police officer.
In that incident, police received reports that a silver vehicle stopped in Rio Grande Walk before its occupants allegedly climbed out and opened fire on people standing outside a property.
Police spokesperson Captain Frederick van Wyk said a 22-year-old man was killed. Four other men, aged 24, 35, 36 and 48, as well as a 56-year-old woman, sustained injuries.
Police officers patrolling nearby reportedly heard the gunfire and responded to the scene. Van Wyk said the attackers then fired several shots at the responding officers, leaving a 42-year-old SAPS member with a shrapnel injury to his head.
“The suspects fled the scene and are yet to be arrested,” Van Wyk said.
Police also believe the Manenberg attack was gang-related. No arrests had been announced in either the Manenberg or Lotus River investigations by Saturday morning.
The two shootings left five people dead and seven others injured within approximately 48 hours. While police have not established any link between the incidents, both attacks involved gunmen allegedly arriving in vehicles, firing at groups gathered outside homes and escaping before arrests could be made.
Reinforced Deployments Under Scrutiny
The decision to reinforce police deployments in Lotus River reflects concern that the attack could lead to further violence or retaliation. Visible patrols may help stabilise the area in the immediate aftermath, but detectives still face the more difficult task of identifying the gunmen and building cases that can lead to successful prosecutions.
Investigators are expected to examine surveillance footage, witness accounts, cellphone information and ballistic evidence recovered from the scene. Police have not confirmed what evidence was collected or whether the vehicle’s registration details are known.
