Cape Town is once again preparing to step onto the international sporting stage as thousands of runners and visitors prepare for the return of the Sanlam Cape Town Marathon, an event increasingly positioning the city among the world’s major marathon destinations.
The Sanlam Cape Town Marathon is expected to bring another major influx of athletes, tourists and international attention to Cape Town this weekend as the event continues expanding its global profile within the competitive world of international road running.
The marathon, hosted around the Green Point precinct and surrounding areas, has steadily evolved from a regional athletics event into one of Africa’s most recognised long-distance running showcases.
Organisers say this year’s event forms part of the marathon’s continued effort to secure official Abbott World Marathon Major status, a milestone that would make Cape Town the first African city to achieve recognition within the prestigious international marathon series.
The Abbott World Marathon Majors currently includes globally recognised races hosted in cities such as New York, London, Boston, Berlin, Chicago, Sydney and Tokyo.
Achieving official inclusion would significantly elevate Cape Town’s position within international sports tourism while potentially attracting larger sponsorships, broadcasting opportunities and overseas participation in future editions of the race.
The marathon weekend will feature multiple race categories including the main road marathon, Peace Runs and several trail events designed to showcase both the city and the Western Cape’s surrounding natural scenery.
Organisers believe the broader event structure allows runners of varying fitness levels and experience to participate while also helping position Cape Town as a destination for outdoor and endurance tourism.
The event is also expected to provide a boost for local hospitality businesses, hotels, restaurants and tourism operators as visitors arrive in the city ahead of the weekend’s activities.
Cape Town’s scenic coastal routes, mountain landscapes and cooler autumn conditions continue contributing to the marathon’s growing international appeal among professional and amateur runners alike.
Beyond athletics, the event increasingly serves as part of the city’s wider strategy to position itself as a global events destination capable of hosting internationally recognised sporting showcases.
The Sanlam Cape Town Marathon takes place on the 23rd and 24th of May at the Green Point precinct, with entry prices starting from R170.
