  • Roughly R1 billion development planned at the V&A Waterfront
  • Project includes one hundred and forty-two luxury rooms and private residences
  • New hospitality investment expected to create jobs and boost tourism

Cape Town’s skyline is preparing for another dramatic transformation, this time led by one of the world’s biggest hospitality brands. With cranes already defining much of the city’s premium waterfront landscape, Marriott International has now confirmed plans for a billion-rand luxury development that could further reshape both Cape Town’s tourism economy and its high-end property market.

Global hospitality giant Marriott International has officially signed an agreement to bring its internationally acclaimed EDITION brand to Africa for the very first time, selecting Cape Town as the launch destination for what is expected to become one of the continent’s most prestigious hospitality developments.

Scheduled to open in October, the project will rise within the iconic V&A Waterfront precinct, a location already recognised as one of South Africa’s most valuable commercial and tourism destinations.

The Cape Town EDITION represents an investment of approximately one billion rand and will introduce a new level of ultra-luxury accommodation to the local market.

Plans for the development include one hundred and forty-two guest rooms and suites, multiple signature dining experiences, a rooftop entertainment venue, a luxury wellness spa, a private swimming pool, and fully integrated meeting and event facilities designed to serve both leisure travellers and international business guests.

But the project extends well beyond hospitality.

Developers have also confirmed The Residences at The Cape Town EDITION, an exclusive collection of six private residences aimed at ultra-high-net-worth buyers seeking permanent ownership within one of South Africa’s most desirable urban destinations.

Industry analysts say developments of this scale often have a significant knock-on effect across surrounding property markets, driving demand for premium residential stock, boosting investor confidence, and increasing land values in adjacent precincts.

Marriott executives say Cape Town’s global appeal, cultural diversity, and growing luxury tourism market made the city a natural fit for the EDITION brand’s African debut.

Karim Cheltout, Senior Vice President of Development for Marriott’s Middle East and Africa division, described the signing as a major milestone in the company’s continental expansion strategy, saying Cape Town reflects the creativity, energy, and international appeal the brand seeks in world-class destinations.

David Green, Chief Executive Officer of the V&A Waterfront, said the project places Cape Town among a select group of global cities trusted to host the EDITION experience, while further strengthening the precinct’s reputation as a destination for luxury retail, premium hospitality, and international investment.

The architectural design will combine global expertise with local identity, led by Shanghai-based design firm Neri and Hu, working alongside Cape Town architects StudioMAS.

Recruitment for senior hospitality positions is already underway, with the company seeking an executive chef, IT leadership, operational managers, and marketing executives as construction planning moves into its next phase.

As international investors continue searching for politically stable, infrastructure-ready urban destinations across Africa, Cape Town’s waterfront once again finds itself at the centre of a billion-rand vote of confidence.
