A late equaliser from Stellenbosch has disrupted the Betway Premiership title race, denying Mamelodi Sundowns a crucial win and exposing frustrations within the defending champions’ camp.

Stellenbosch delivered a disciplined and determined performance to hold Mamelodi Sundowns to a one all draw at Loftus Versfeld, ending the champions’ run of ten consecutive league victories.

Sundowns appeared to be in control for much of the match, taking the lead in the first half through Ntsiki Tshabaleng, who found the net in the twenty seventh minute after a period of sustained pressure.

Despite trailing, Stellenbosch remained organised and patient, gradually working their way back into the game while limiting Sundowns’ attacking threat.

The turning point came late in the match when Stellenbosch were awarded a penalty following a foul on Chumani Butsaka.

Although the initial spot kick was saved by Ronwen Williams, the rebound fell kindly and was converted to level the score, securing a valuable point for the visitors.

The result not only halted Sundowns’ winning streak but also prevented them from overtaking Orlando Pirates at the top of the table, leaving them just one point behind with a game in hand.

Speaking after the match, Sundowns coach Miguel Cardoso expressed frustration with his team’s performance, particularly their lack of intensity in the early stages.

“In the first twenty minutes, we were quite sloppy,” Cardoso said. “It was not really very intense, not really very aggressive, and we made it easy for Stellenbosch.”

He added that despite improving as the match progressed, his side failed to capitalise on key opportunities.

“We did more than enough to score, but we did not take our chances when it mattered,” he said.

For Stellenbosch, the result reflects a growing confidence and ability to compete against top-tier opposition, particularly away from home.

Their defensive discipline and ability to respond under pressure were key factors in securing the draw, sending a clear signal that they are capable of challenging stronger sides. As the season continues, the result could have broader implications for the title race, while also boosting Stellenbosch’s standing as a competitive force in the league.
