Some of South Africa’s brightest young rugby prospects have arrived in the Western Cape as preparations intensify for the upcoming Under 20 International Series, with Cape Town and Stellenbosch preparing to host the next generation of international rugby talent over the coming days.
The Junior Springbok training squad assembled at the Stellenbosch Academy of Sport earlier this week as preparations ramped up for the forthcoming Under 20 International Series.
The tournament will feature South Africa, Chile, Fiji and Georgia, with fixtures scheduled across several well-known Western Cape rugby venues including Rondebosch Boys’ High School, Wynberg Boys’ High School and Paul Roos Gymnasium in Stellenbosch.
The series follows South Africa’s recent success in the SANZAAR Under 20 Rugby Championship in Gqeberha, where the Junior Boks secured victories over Argentina and Australia before drawing against New Zealand in their final fixture.
That strong performance has helped build confidence inside the squad ahead of the next stage of competition.
Several familiar faces returned to camp this week, including flyhalf Vusi Moyo, who recently made his Vodacom United Rugby Championship debut for the Hollywoodbets Sharks.
Other returning players include Luan Giliomee and hooker Esethu Mnebelele, both of whom missed the Eastern Cape tournament through injury.
Prop Kai Pratt, loose forward Vuyo Gwiji and centres Pieter van der Merwe and Christian Vorster have also returned to the squad following rehabilitation.
Junior Bok head coach Kevin Foote said the energy around the camp had remained positive, particularly with players returning after injury setbacks.
Foote said seeing players back in training brought excitement to the group, adding that the squad understood the importance of quickly shifting focus toward the upcoming fixtures against Chile, Fiji and Georgia.
South Africa opens its campaign against Chile at Rondebosch Boys’ High School before later fixtures against Fiji and Georgia.
The final matches of the series will take place at Markötter Stadium at Paul Roos Gymnasium in Stellenbosch.
The tournament is expected to attract strong support from rugby fans across the Western Cape, with many spectators eager to get an early look at players who could eventually progress into senior provincial and Springbok rugby structures.
For young players, the series also provides an important international platform ahead of future professional opportunities.
