Cape Town’s cultural calendar takes on a powerful youth focus this weekend, as talented learners from across the Western Cape prepare to step into the spotlight at one of the province’s most respected annual performance platforms.

The Artscape Theatre Centre in Cape Town is preparing to welcome hundreds of learners, families, teachers and supporters this weekend as the fifteenth annual High School Nasheed Competition returns to the Mother City.

The event, scheduled for Sunday, has become one of the Western Cape’s most respected youth cultural showcases, bringing together learners from schools across the province in a celebration of music, faith, discipline and artistic expression.

Over the past fifteen years, the competition has grown from a niche community gathering into a recognised platform for young performers, offering learners the opportunity to perform on one of South Africa’s most respected stages while building confidence, vocal discipline and public speaking ability.

Organisers say this year’s competition is expected to attract strong participation from schools across Cape Town, the Cape Flats, the Winelands and surrounding communities, with families and supporters expected to fill the venue throughout the day.

Artscape says programmes like these continue playing an important role in nurturing young creative talent while building stronger community connections through the performing arts.

“Events such as these create opportunities for young people to find their voice, build confidence and experience the discipline of live performance in a professional environment,” organisers said ahead of Sunday’s event.

Beyond the performances themselves, the competition has also become an important platform for cultural exchange, youth mentorship and family participation, helping preserve traditions while introducing them to new generations.

For many learners, performing on the Artscape stage represents a career milestone and, in some cases, the beginning of future opportunities in music, broadcasting, education and public leadership.

As Cape Town continues building its reputation as one of South Africa’s cultural capitals, events like the High School Nasheed Competition serve as an important reminder that some of the city’s greatest future talent may already be waiting behind the curtain.
