  • Authorities call for public assistance and stronger reporting

A series of disturbing incidents involving children across Cape Town has raised urgent concerns, as police investigate multiple cases reported within days of each other in different parts of the city.

Police in Cape Town are investigating a number of serious incidents involving children, with cases reported in Delft, Valhalla Park, and Capricorn highlighting the vulnerability of young victims in communities affected by crime and social instability.

In Delft, officers registered an inquest after the body of a newborn baby girl was discovered in an open field in the Tsunami informal settlement. According to police, the discovery was made on Tuesday afternoon along Sering Way, after residents noticed unusual activity in the area.

Members of the public reported seeing dogs gathering around a plastic bag, which led to the discovery of the infant. The baby was found with the umbilical cord still attached, indicating that the child had been recently born. Police have confirmed that no arrests have been made at this stage, and investigations are ongoing to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.

A separate case in Valhalla Park has also drawn attention, after a six-year-old girl was seriously injured during a gang-related shooting. According to SAPS, officers from Bishop Lavis responded to reports of gunfire in Eleanor Street on Thursday morning.

Upon arrival, they found the young victim with a gunshot wound to the head. Police confirmed that the child was caught in the crossfire during a confrontation between rival gangs. She was transported to a medical facility for urgent treatment, while the suspects fled the scene. An attempted murder case has been opened, and no arrests have yet been made.

In a third incident, police confirmed the arrest of an eighteen-year-old man in connection with the alleged rape of a three-year-old girl in the Capricorn policing precinct near Muizenberg. The case was reported on Thursday, and the suspect has since appeared in court.

According to police, the accused remains in custody as legal proceedings continue. Community organisations, including the Muizenberg Community Policing Forum, have strongly condemned the incident and called for greater vigilance and reporting of crimes involving children.

Authorities have urged members of the public to come forward with any information that may assist investigations, emphasising the importance of community cooperation in addressing crime and protecting vulnerable individuals.
