A young chess talent from Cape Town has captured national attention after delivering a dominant performance to secure top honours at one of South Africa’s premier junior tournaments.

Shaurya Singh, a Grade 8 learner at Milnerton High School, has been crowned the Under-14 Open champion at the South African Junior Closed Chess Championship, following an exceptional performance against some of the country’s best young players.

The tournament, held in Rustenburg in the North West Province, brought together 79 participants from all nine provinces, creating a highly competitive field of rising chess talent.

Singh stood out throughout the competition, demonstrating consistency, strategic depth and composure under pressure. He finished the tournament with an impressive score of 8.5 out of a possible 9 points, placing him comfortably ahead of his competitors.

His performance reflects not only technical ability but also a high level of discipline and focus, qualities that are essential at competitive level chess. Observers noted his ability to control matches and capitalise on key moments, allowing him to maintain a strong position throughout the tournament.

The victory marks a significant milestone in Singh’s young career and places him among the top junior chess players in the country. As a result of his achievement, he has earned national federation colours, which will allow him to represent South Africa at upcoming international chess tournaments.

For Milnerton High School, the achievement is a source of pride, highlighting the strength of academic and extracurricular development within the institution. It also reflects the growing presence of competitive chess within the Western Cape, where schools continue to produce talented players capable of competing at national level.

The success of players like Singh underscores the importance of youth development programmes in sport, particularly in disciplines such as chess, where early exposure and consistent training play a critical role in long-term success.

As he prepares to represent South Africa on the international stage, Singh’s achievement stands as a testament to the potential of young talent emerging from Cape Town.
