A fatal collision in Eerste River during the early hours of Monday morning has once again highlighted the risks on Cape Town’s roads, leaving one person dead and several others injured.

A Mercedes-Benz driver has died after his vehicle crashed into the back of a stationary Golden Arrow bus in Eerste River, in an incident that occurred in the early hours of Monday morning.

The crash was reported at approximately 05:00 at the intersection of Bobs Way and Duke Street, an area that sees regular commuter traffic during peak periods. According to initial reports, the vehicle was carrying five occupants at the time of the collision.

Emergency services responded to the scene, where the driver was declared dead. Four passengers sustained injuries and were transported to a nearby medical facility for treatment. The extent of their injuries has not been fully detailed, but authorities confirmed that all survivors received medical attention.

Police spokesperson Constable Ndakhe Gwala confirmed that officers from Kleinvlei Police Station attended the scene and have since opened a case of culpable homicide. Investigations are currently underway to determine the circumstances leading up to the crash, including whether factors such as speed, visibility or driver fatigue may have played a role.

Golden Arrow Bus Services confirmed that the bus involved was stationary at the time of the incident and had no passengers on board. The bus driver was treated for shock following the collision.

The incident has once again drawn attention to early morning road conditions, where reduced visibility and driver fatigue can significantly increase the risk of accidents. Authorities have repeatedly urged motorists to remain vigilant, particularly during these hours.

As investigations continue, officials are expected to examine all contributing factors in an effort to establish accountability and prevent similar incidents in the future.
