Editorial Code of Conduct

Editorial Code of Conduct

Cape Town News operates as an independent Western Cape newsroom committed to accuracy, fairness, and public accountability. Our editorial standards guide all reporting decisions and ensure that journalism remains focused on the public interest rather than commercial or political influence.

1. Accuracy & Verification

CTNews makes every reasonable effort to verify information before publication. Facts are cross-checked against credible sources, and official statements are confirmed where possible. Where developing stories are reported, updates are provided as new verified information becomes available. If a material error is identified, it is corrected promptly and transparently to maintain public trust.

2. Fairness & Balance

Reporting aims to present relevant perspectives on matters of public importance. Individuals, institutions, and organisations that are the subject of serious claims are given a reasonable opportunity to respond. CTNews does not publish unsubstantiated allegations and avoids unnecessary sensationalism or language that could distort the facts of a story.

3. Public Interest Focus

Coverage prioritises issues affecting Cape Town and the Western Cape, including governance, infrastructure, crime, public safety, community development, economic activity, and civic accountability. Editorial decisions are guided by relevance, impact, and the broader interests of the region’s residents and stakeholders.

4. Independence

Editorial decisions are made independently of political parties, sponsors, advertisers, or external interest groups. Commercial partnerships do not influence story selection, editorial framing, or investigative focus. The newsroom and commercial functions operate separately to protect editorial integrity.

5. Transparency

Where content includes sponsorship or commercial placements, such arrangements are clearly distinguished from independent editorial reporting. Corrections, clarifications, or updates are issued when required. CTNews seeks to maintain openness about its editorial standards and governance practices.

6. Respect & Responsibility

Reporting is conducted with consideration for privacy, safety, and legal boundaries. CTNews avoids discrimination, hate speech, and inflammatory language. Sensitive matters, including crime and legal proceedings, are reported responsibly with regard to due process and community impact.

7. Accountability

Readers and stakeholders may raise concerns regarding accuracy or editorial conduct by contacting editorial@ctnews.co.za. All substantive concerns are reviewed internally to ensure compliance with established editorial standards and to uphold public confidence.

8. Corrections Policy

CTNews is committed to correcting significant factual inaccuracies promptly and transparently. When an error materially affects the understanding of a report, a correction or clarification will be issued within the article or bulletin where appropriate. Updates to developing stories will be clearly indicated to maintain transparency with readers.

9. Conflict of Interest

Editors and contributors are expected to disclose any personal, financial, or professional interests that could reasonably be perceived to influence reporting. Where a potential conflict exists, editorial oversight measures are applied to ensure impartiality and public trust are maintained.
