Mitchells Plain shootings leave 4 dead as gang violence surges in Cape Town

A wave of violence swept through Mitchells Plain on Tuesday, leaving four people dead and several others injured in what authorities describe as separate but closely timed shooting incidents in the Town Centre.

The first incident was reported in the early hours of the morning, when police responded to a fatal shooting in Mitchells Plain’s Town Centre. An adult male was found with gunshot wounds and was declared dead on the scene, marking the first of a series of violent incidents that would unfold throughout the day.

Just hours later, a second and more severe shooting occurred in the same area, sending shockwaves through the community. According to emergency responders, multiple shots were fired in the afternoon, leaving seven people wounded. Three victims were declared dead at the scene, while four others were transported to nearby medical facilities for urgent treatment. Several of the injured are understood to be in critical condition.

The close proximity in both timing and location has raised strong suspicions of coordinated or retaliatory violence, although authorities have not yet confirmed any direct link between the incidents. Mitchells Plain has long been affected by gang-related conflict, and residents say the latest shootings reflect an ongoing cycle of violence that continues to grip the area.

In response, law enforcement agencies have intensified operations across known hotspot areas in Cape Town. Over the weekend leading up to the shootings, coordinated patrols and enforcement actions were carried out in Crossroads, Philippi East, and Mandela Park, areas identified as high-risk zones for criminal activity.

During one of these operations, Law Enforcement Advancement Plan officers made a significant breakthrough when they recovered multiple firearms and ammunition after a suspect fled and abandoned a bag. Authorities believe the weapons were intended for use in further criminal activity and could have contributed to additional violence if not intercepted.

City officials have repeatedly stressed that the removal of illegal firearms remains one of the most effective ways to reduce violent crime. However, they also acknowledge ongoing challenges, including the steady flow of illicit weapons and the low conviction rates for gun possession cases, often linked to resource constraints within the police and prosecuting authorities.

Further enforcement efforts uncovered what is believed to be an active vehicle stripping operation in the Marikana informal settlement. Officers recovered several dismantled stolen vehicles and large quantities of vehicle parts, indicating the presence of organised criminal networks operating within the metro. No arrests were made at the scene, as suspects fled before officers arrived.

Across the broader metro, enforcement data paints a picture of sustained pressure on policing resources. More than 100 suspects were arrested over the same period, thousands of fines were issued, and numerous drug confiscations were recorded. Traffic enforcement also remained active, with dozens of motorists arrested for driving under the influence and hundreds of outstanding warrants executed.

For residents of Mitchells Plain, the latest shootings have once again brought the realities of gang violence into sharp focus. Community members continue to call for increased visibility of police, more intelligence-driven operations, and long-term interventions aimed at breaking the cycle of violence.

As investigations continue, authorities have urged anyone with information to come forward, while reaffirming their commitment to stabilising affected areas and preventing further loss of life.

Cape Town tourism surges as over 121000 visitors arrive, raising economic hopes and cost concerns

Cape Town’s global appeal continues to strengthen, with the latest tourism figures showing a sharp increase in international arrivals, driven largely by European travellers.

According to Statistics South Africa’s latest international tourism report, a total of 121612 visitors arrived at Cape Town International Airport during February alone. This forms part of a broader national movement of 2689619 travellers passing through South African ports of entry during the same period, including arrivals, departures, and transits.

European tourists made up the dominant share of overseas arrivals, accounting for 161707 visitors nationally, with 90427 of those choosing Cape Town as their destination. This represents 72 point 5 percent of all overseas tourists, confirming Europe as the city’s strongest international market.

The United Kingdom and Germany remain the leading contributors, sending 45404 and 39866 tourists respectively. They are followed by the Netherlands and France, reinforcing Cape Town’s strong ties to traditional long haul markets.

Beyond Europe, Cape Town is also seeing growing interest from emerging markets. In February, 15804 visitors arrived from Asia, with 3792 travelling directly to Cape Town. Economists attribute this trend to rising living standards in countries such as China and India, where expanding middle classes are increasingly able to travel internationally.

Tourism plays a critical role in the local economy, particularly through the inflow of foreign currency. Economists note that when more visitors enter the country than leave, it creates a net positive effect on the rand. A stronger rand can help stabilise fuel prices and reduce the cost of imported goods, easing inflationary pressure on households.

However, the benefits of tourism are increasingly being weighed against local challenges. In Cape Town, high visitor demand has been linked to rising property prices and rental costs, especially in central and coastal areas where short term accommodation continues to expand.

Economists warn that while tourism growth supports economic stability, failing to manage its impact could place additional strain on local residents. At the same time, global uncertainties, including geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, may affect future travel patterns, particularly from Europe.

With more than 30 international destinations connected to Cape Town and over 200 flights operating weekly, the city remains a major global tourism hub. The challenge now lies in balancing continued growth with long term sustainability for both the economy and Cape-tonians.

Cape Town CBD public toilet project surpasses 1005604 uses as demand continues to grow

Cape Town’s public toilet project in the Central Business District has reached a significant milestone, with more than one million recorded uses since its launch in 2022.

The initiative, introduced to address the long-standing shortage of accessible sanitation facilities in the city centre, has recorded a total of 1005604 visits as of February 2026. The project is a joint effort between the City of Cape Town, the Cape Town Central City Improvement District, and non profit organisation Streetscapes.

Of the total recorded usage, 268244 visits have been attributed to people experiencing homelessness, highlighting the critical role the service plays in supporting vulnerable communities within the CBD.

The network currently consists of 9 mobile toilet facilities strategically positioned along high foot traffic areas, including Adderley Street, Longmarket Street, Canterbury Street, and Barrack Street. An additional unit has recently been installed near the Department of Home Affairs, further expanding coverage in one of the city’s busiest administrative zones.

The facilities operate 7 days a week, from 7 in the morning until 11 at night, providing consistent and reliable access throughout the day. Data from Streetscapes indicates a steady increase in usage, with an average of around 19000 visits per month, and projections suggesting that annual usage could reach approximately 230000 visits going forward.

City officials say the project has evolved beyond basic sanitation, becoming a key component of urban management. The presence of trained attendants not only ensures cleanliness and maintenance, but also contributes to safety by deterring anti social behaviour and creating a monitored environment for users.

The initiative has also created employment opportunities, with team members gaining work experience and, in some cases, transitioning into permanent employment within the first 6 months of involvement.

Beyond its direct benefits, the project has helped reduce pressure on nearby businesses, which often face the burden of providing restroom access to the public.

With demand continuing to rise, the City and its partners are now exploring plans to expand the network further, with an estimated need for an additional 6 to 8 facilities to meet growing demand in the CBD.

SANRAL draft policy raises concerns over roadside businesses and new levy proposals

A proposed policy by the South African National Roads Agency Limited, SANRAL, is drawing scrutiny after new regulations affecting roadside businesses were published for public comment.

The draft framework, released in the Government Gazette, sets out how rest and service facilities along national roads will be developed, approved, and managed in future. The policy aims to regulate the location, size, and spacing of facilities such as petrol stations, restaurants, and convenience outlets.

According to SANRAL, the framework will apply to developments on SANRAL-owned land as well as private and public sites that require direct access to national roads. This broad scope means the policy could affect a wide range of existing and future businesses operating along key transport routes.

One of the most debated aspects of the proposal is the introduction of a levy linked to gross turnover. The levy would apply to revenue generated from fuel sales, retail outlets, and food services within these facilities. SANRAL has indicated that this charge would form part of access conditions and may be subject to review over time, with notice given to affected parties.

The agency says the policy is intended to support more structured development, improve accessibility, and align with transformation objectives within the sector. It also states that decisions related to approvals will be accompanied by written reasons, and that affected stakeholders will be given the opportunity to make formal representations.

However, the proposal has raised concerns among industry groups, including Sakeliga, who argue that the policy could place additional financial pressure on private operators. Critics have called for broader consultation, warning that the levy and regulatory framework could limit investment and growth if not carefully implemented.

As the consultation process continues, the final outcome of the policy is expected to shape the future of roadside infrastructure across South Africa, with implications for both business operations and the travelling public.

Cape Town City seek turnaround as promotion race tightens in Motsepe Championship

Cape Town City are under increasing pressure to return to winning form as the Motsepe Foundation Championship enters a decisive stage.

Cape Town City’s recent dip in form has seen them slip to 5th position on the log, with 37 points collected from 22 matches. A run of 3 games without a win has stalled their momentum at a critical point in the season, placing their promotion ambitions under threat.

The Citizens recorded draws against Milford and Venda Football Academy in recent fixtures, before suffering a 3 to 1 defeat earlier in March. These results have left them 2 points behind the promotion play off positions, increasing the importance of their upcoming match against Black Leopards.

With the season approaching its final stages, every point is now crucial. A positive result in their next fixture could see City move back into contention, while another setback may further complicate their push for promotion.

At the top of the table, Milford continue to lead the standings with 40 points from 22 games. Their recent 5 to 0 victory has reinforced their position as strong contenders for automatic promotion.

Casric Stars, currently in 4th position with 38 points, remain firmly in the race after securing a 4 to 0 win in their latest outing. The narrow gap between the top teams highlights how competitive the league has become.

Elsewhere, the battle at the bottom of the table continues, with Baroka sitting in 16th position on 18 points, just 3 points from safety. Midlands Wanderers, placed 14th, are also under pressure as they remain only 3 points above the relegation zone.

With multiple teams still in contention at both ends of the table, the coming fixtures are expected to play a decisive role in shaping the outcome of the season.
