Canal Plus Axes Showmax After Billions In Losses

The African streaming market is entering a new phase after Canal Plus confirmed that the Showmax platform will be discontinued following years of heavy financial losses. The decision marks the end of one of the continent’s most ambitious attempts to build a homegrown streaming competitor capable of challenging global giants such as Netflix and Disney Plus.

Financial figures reveal the scale of the challenge. During its peak investment year, Showmax recorded losses of roughly four point nine billion rand. That translates to more than thirteen million rand lost every day, highlighting the enormous financial pressure the platform placed on its parent company MultiChoice.

The losses represented a dramatic increase from the previous year, when Showmax reported losses of around two point six billion rand. The sharp rise was largely driven by the costly relaunch of the platform, which included rebuilding the service using the Peacock streaming technology developed by American media giant Comcast.

Despite the extensive investment, the platform struggled to generate sufficient revenue to sustain its operations. Showmax generated only about seven hundred and fifty million rand in revenue during the same period, meaning the service was spending more than six rand for every rand it earned.

The relaunch was originally designed to position Showmax as Africa’s leading streaming platform. MultiChoice hoped that access to Comcast’s content pipeline, which included Hollywood studios and international television networks, would attract large audiences across the continent.

However, the realities of the African market presented major obstacles. Streaming services rely heavily on reliable broadband infrastructure and affordable data costs, both of which remain uneven across many parts of Africa. High mobile data costs and inconsistent connectivity limited subscriber growth, preventing the platform from achieving the scale needed to offset its expenses.

The financial impact of the losses extended beyond the streaming division. The sharp increase in Showmax’s losses contributed significantly to a decline in MultiChoice’s overall trading profit, cutting the group’s earnings by nearly half during the same financial period.

Following its acquisition of MultiChoice, Canal Plus is now implementing a new strategy. Instead of continuing with the Showmax platform, the company intends to roll out its own streaming ecosystem using the myCanal and TV Plus applications already operating in other international markets.

These platforms have been designed with lower bandwidth environments in mind, offering features such as offline viewing and better integration between mobile and television devices.

For existing subscribers, the closure of Showmax means the current service will eventually disappear. Canal Plus has indicated that further announcements will be made about how customers will transition to the new platform and what content offerings will remain available.

Cape Town Mourns Soli Philander

Cape Town’s arts and entertainment community is mourning the loss of celebrated performer Soli Philander, whose decades long career left an indelible mark on South African theatre, television and broadcasting.

Philander passed away at the age of sixty five after battling cancer. Born and raised in Elsies River, he became widely recognised for his distinctive voice, sharp humour and ability to connect with audiences through storytelling and performance.

Over the course of his career Philander worked across multiple creative disciplines. He built a reputation as an actor, comedian, playwright, director, television presenter and radio host, performing on major stages throughout South Africa as well as internationally.

Many viewers remember him from television programmes such as Liriekeraai and the local version of Are You Smarter Than A Fifth Grader. His quick wit and engaging personality made him a familiar and much loved presence in households across the country.

Another role that became deeply embedded in South African popular culture was his performance as Timothy Traddle, the tortoise character from the SABC children’s programme Kideo. Although audiences did not see his face in the costume, his voice and personality helped make the character memorable for an entire generation of viewers.

Philander also appeared in numerous film and television productions. His acting credits included series and films such as Arendsvlei, Dias Santana, Devil’s Peak and The Umbrella Men Escape From Robben Island.

Beyond the stage and screen, Philander maintained a strong presence in radio broadcasting. As the host of the talk show Airborne on CapeTalk, he became known for thoughtful conversations and an approachable style that resonated with listeners.

In recent years Philander dedicated much of his time to community work in District Six, where he lived at Springfield Terrace. Those close to him say he remained deeply committed to social justice and community upliftment.

Members of the arts community have described his passing as a profound loss, not only because of his artistic achievements but also because of his role as a mentor and advocate for emerging performers.

Hanover Park Residents Launch Rent Boycott

Tensions are escalating in Hanover Park as residents and civic leaders move forward with a rent boycott against the City of Cape Town over long standing disputes involving municipal housing.

The Hanover Park Civic Organisation announced that the boycott is being implemented with the support of residents who believe they have already paid for their homes through decades of rental payments.

Community representatives argue that many tenants have been paying rent for more than fifty years and claim the total amount paid has exceeded the value of the properties several times over.

Residents are therefore demanding that the homes be transferred into the names of long term tenants, allowing families to gain full ownership of the properties they have occupied for generations.

The civic organisation has also indicated that residents may begin occupying vacant or barricaded municipal houses in the area. According to community leaders, these properties have been left unused for extended periods while many families remain in need of stable housing.

City officials have responded with a strong warning that a rent boycott would violate existing lease agreements. Authorities say non payment of rent constitutes a breach of contract and could result in debt collection, legal proceedings and eviction.

The City of Cape Town currently manages more than three thousand four hundred rental housing units in Hanover Park as part of its regulated affordable housing programme.

Officials say rental income from these properties is essential for maintaining buildings and funding repairs. They have also warned that unlawful occupation of municipal housing often leads to damage and increases maintenance costs.

In addition, the City noted that illegal occupation can delay the allocation of housing units to families on official waiting lists who qualify for public housing.

Despite the growing tensions, municipal authorities say they remain open to engagement with community organisations to address concerns through lawful processes.

Table View Woman Crowned Mrs Universe South Africa

A woman from Table View has made history after being crowned Mrs Universe South Africa, becoming the first Cape Town based winner of the national title.

Giverny Venter will now represent South Africa at the Mrs Universe World competition scheduled to take place in Sri Lanka later this year. The event brings together contestants from around one hundred countries who present advocacy initiatives aimed at addressing social challenges.

Venter is the mother of a four year old child and says balancing family responsibilities with pageant preparation required careful planning and discipline. She credits structured routines and personal development strategies with helping her remain focused throughout the competition.

Professionally she works as a strategic life coach and cryptocurrency trader, using mindset coaching techniques to help clients achieve personal and financial goals.

Unlike many contestants who focus their advocacy work on issues such as domestic violence, Venter has chosen to focus specifically on child abuse awareness and the protection of vulnerable children.

Her motivation for this cause stems from personal experience. As a teenager she left an abusive home environment at the age of thirteen and relocated to Cape Town, where she later attended boarding school in Durbanville.

She has spoken about how the natural beauty of the Table View coastline helped her heal during that period of her life. Sitting by the ocean, she says, offered a sense of peace and stability during difficult times.

Today she works with children in the Masiphumelele community near Kommetjie, where she supports initiatives aimed at protecting vulnerable young people.

Venter hopes to expand these efforts by eventually establishing safe houses across the city where abused children can receive shelter, counselling and opportunities for recovery.

Stormers Prepare For Crucial URC Stage

The Stormers are preparing for a critical phase in the United Rugby Championship as the competition approaches the decisive stages of the season.

With the race for play off places intensifying, every match now carries significant implications for the standings. South African franchises are also competing for dominance in the South African Shield, which adds another layer of rivalry to derby fixtures.

The Stormers return to action after experiencing a challenging run of results that slowed their earlier momentum in the competition.

Leadership within the squad has shifted, with second row forward JD Schickerling stepping into the role of captain. He will partner with Adré Smith in the second row while the loose trio of Paul de Villiers, Ben Jason Dixon and Evan Roos provides strength in the forward pack.

Coaches will be hoping that the team can rediscover the rhythm and accuracy that earlier in the campaign made the Stormers one of the more consistent sides in the tournament.

Across the South African franchises the competition remains tight. The Sharks currently lead the South African Shield standings, followed closely by the Lions, while the Stormers and Bulls remain within reach of improving their positions.

Derby fixtures between South African teams often play a decisive role in shaping both the shield standings and the broader race for the top eight positions.

With only a limited number of matches remaining before the knockout stages begin, consistent performances will now be essential for the Stormers if they hope to remain competitive in the championship race.

West Coast Chilli Fest Returns To Sunningdale

Food lovers and spice enthusiasts are expected to gather in large numbers this weekend as the West Coast Chilli Fest returns to Sunningdale with a celebration of chilli inspired cuisine and street food culture.

The event will take place at the Sunningdale Sports Complex, a venue known for hosting large community festivals including the Blouberg Night Market and other popular food and lifestyle events.

Organisers say the festival will combine indoor exhibition spaces with an outdoor street food area, allowing visitors to explore a wide variety of chilli themed products and culinary experiences.

Around sixty stalls are expected to participate, including approximately forty exhibitors specialising in chilli sauces, plants, seeds and other chilli related products.

In addition to the food and market stalls, visitors will be able to enjoy live music performances and several competitions throughout the day.

One of the most anticipated attractions is the public hot chilli challenge, where participants attempt to handle increasingly intense levels of spice.

A separate hot sauce competition will allow producers to showcase their creations while competing for prizes and recognition within the chilli enthusiast community.

Families are also encouraged to attend, with a dedicated children’s competition taking place earlier in the day and free entry available for visitors under the age of sixteen.

The event is designed as a lively community gathering where people can explore new flavours, support local vendors and enjoy a relaxed day out with friends and family.

Saturday Weather Forecast Across The Western Cape

Saturday is shaping up to be a cooler day across the Western Cape, with Cape Town likely to wake up to light rain and cloudy skies. The morning and early afternoon may bring scattered showers, but conditions are expected to improve later in the day with clearer skies by the evening.

Temperatures in Cape Town will reach a high of 20°C with an overnight low of 15°C. Inland areas will feel noticeably warmer, with Paarl expected to reach 26°C before dropping to 12°C overnight, while Stellenbosch is forecast to see a high of 22°C and a low of 11°C.

There is about a 30 percent chance of light rain during the day with possible rainfall of around 3 mm. Humidity levels are expected to sit at roughly 75 percent, which may keep the air feeling slightly damp early in the day. Winds will blow from the south at around 15 km/h.

Along the coastline, ocean swells are expected to reach around 3.3 metres with a south-westerly swell period of 11 seconds, which could make for rougher sea conditions at times.

For those planning time near the water, high tide in Cape Town will occur at 05:23 and again at 17:38, while low tide follows at 11:31 and 23:33. The sun rises at 06:39 and sets at 19:14. Even with some cloud and rain around, the UV index remains high at level 9, so sun protection will still be important once the skies clear.
